Washington, DC – Earlier today, in Lafayette Park, across from the White House, the National Center for Victims of Crime joined more than 25 other groups to announce the formation of a coalition to ask the Obama Administration to institute a National Commission on the Sexual Abuse of Children.  The Catholic Whistleblowers, the dedicated clergy and former clergy of the Catholic Church committed to child protection formed the group as Catholic bishops gather for their annual meeting in Baltimore.

Following over a decade trying to work from inside the Church, the Catholic Whistleblowers are asking the President to institute a broad-ranging commission to study child sex abuse in all settings along the lines of the groundbreaking Australia Royal Commission on Institutional Abuse.

“33 years ago, President Reagan had the compassion and courage to create a presidential commission on crime victims’ rights.  That commission brought assistance to victims often overlooked by the criminal justice system.  Today we ask President Obama to have the same courage and compassion to create the National Commission on the Sexual Abuse of Children to provide needed assistance to our most vulnerable victims,” commented Mai Fernandez, Executive Director of the National Center for Victims of Crime.
